Inlay Lake (Wetland) Sanctuary

The famous Inle Lake (Wetland) Sanctuary is located in Nyaung Shwe, Pinlaung and Peh Kon Townships of Southern Shan State in the eastern part of Myanmar at an elevation of over 2,950 feet. The lake covers an area of 642.32 square miles. The lake can be accessed by road from Yangon to Nyaung Shwe, a 430 mile trip. The lakes are also serviced by regular flights from Yangon to Heho, and passengers then travel 14 miles by car to Nyaung Shwe. A train travels from Yangon via Thazi to Shwe Nyaung. Nyaung Shwe is a further ten miles by car.

The Inle Lake (Wetland) Sanctuary was established in 1985 to conserve and protect natural vegetation, wetland birds and fresh water fish. The sanctuary also preserves geological features and the scenic beauty of the mountain areas.
